This morning, news broke that Don Mattingly and the Los Angeles Dodgers parted ways after Mattingly managed the Dodgers for five seasons. While it seems like the perfect opening for Mattingly to return to the Yankees as a hitting coach, Mattingly has ruled out any hitting coach position that may be available this offseason.
Joel Sherman of the New York Post says Mattingly is still interested in managing and might look at the Seattle Mariners and even the Washington Nationals as possible landing spots. The Mariners and Nationals fired their managers shortly after the 2015 regular season.
The Dodgers liked Mattingly as a manager, but it was obvious that they weren’t interested in the long term, and the Dodgers were looking for a manager who would stand up to the players on the Dodgers roster. This comes after Mattingly got into arguments with Clayton Kershaw and Andre Ethier over the last month of the season.
In five seasons as the manager with the Dodgers, Mattingly had a 446-363 (.551) record.
